Round Salad Tomato

Availability
May ⇔ November
A variety of round, slightly ribbed, flattened tomato with a beautiful, glossy dark green colour, commonly called ‘insalataro’ or ‘da mensa’.
It has dense, fleshy flesh, thin skin and a sweet, juicy flavour that is very balanced and light.
One berry weighs between 130 and 250 grams. It contains vitamins and minerals and boasts antioxidant and anti-cancer properties.
As its name suggests, the round ‘salad’ tomato is best eaten raw in salads.
A drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, a pinch of salt and a basil leaf are all that is needed to enhance its flavour.
When fully ripe, however, one can also experiment with baking, e.g. for the recipe for stuffed tomatoes.
