Pomodori selezionati e coltivati in Italia

Oblong Red Tomato

Pomodoro Cuore di Bue

Availability

May ⇔ November

A typical product of the Campania region, it is characterised by its particular sweet and sour flavour, the elongated shape of the berry with parallel longitudinal depressions, its bright red colour and the scarce presence of seeds and placental fibres.

It comes in the form of clusters of 6 to 8 fruits. It is very rich in vitamin A, vitamin C and mineral salts and has antioxidant properties.

It is thought that the first seeds of the ‘San Marzano’ variety were donated by the Viceroy of Peru to the King of Naples in 1770 and planted near the town of San Marzano del Sarno, from which the variety takes its name.

The oblong red tomato is best eaten raw: excellent for salads or bruschetta. To enjoy it at its best, a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and a pinch of salt are enough, but it is also suitable for the preparation of sauces.
